Kőszeg hill

The cross-border Kőszeg Hills are part of the Austro-Hungarian Írottkő Nature Park, where tourists in boots can really feel in their element among the well-marked hiking trails and the almost Alpine atmosphere of the mountains. There are a number of popular hiking destinations, from the highest point, the border-crowned, lookout-crowned Írottkää, the charming St Vid’s Chapel, the Seven Wise Men spring and the panoramic Calvary Hill in Kőszeg.

The small villages hiding at the foot of the mountain range also boast a number of beautiful sights, from the rustic Cák cellar, the Sibrik castle in Bozsok to the water mill in Velem.

There are several interesting hiking and trekking routes in the mountains:

From the easily accessible Kincs-pensionen (treasure rest), via the little-known Zeiger-nyerg (Zeiger spring) to the Stájer huts, then up to the highest spring in the mountain range, the Hörmann spring, and back across the main ridge of the Kőszeg hills, which offers magnificent views, to the Óház-tető (old house roof).

Írottkő (884 m), the highest point of the Kőszeg Hills and of the whole Transdanubian region, is the top of the lookout tower, which was “cut in two” by the Trianon border. From one of the most atmospheric villages in Kőszeg-Hegyalja, Velem, we set off to conquer the peak, passing the charming

On the way back, we will visit the most interesting geological landmark of the mountain range, the rock formations of the Kalapos rocks.

The most beautiful tourist destinations in the Kőszeg area of the mountain range are combined in one easy hike. After the charming Calvary towering above the town, we climb up to the top of the Old House, home of Kőszeg’s first castle, with its bizarre rock formations and magnificent views, and descend to the Seven Springs, one of the most popular hiking spots in the mountain range, before following the former Iron Curtain back to town.
